How to Hear from the Lord
Exodus 16:11–21 (AV)
11And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,
12I have heard the murmurings of the children of Israel: speak unto them, saying, At even ye shall eat flesh, and in the morning ye shall be filled with bread; and ye shall know that I am the LORD your God.
13And it came to pass, that at even the quails came up, and covered the camp: and in the morning the dew lay round about the host.
14And when the dew that lay was gone up, behold, upon the face of the wilderness there lay a small round thing, as small as the hoar frost on the ground.
15And when the children of Israel saw it, they said one to another, It is manna: for they wist not what it was. And Moses said unto them, This is the bread which the LORD hath given you to eat.
16This is the thing which the LORD hath commanded, Gather of it every man according to his eating, an omer for every man, according to the number of your persons; take ye every man for them which are in his tents.
17And the children of Israel did so, and gathered, some more, some less.
18And when they did mete it with an omer, he that gathered much had nothing over, and he that gathered little had no lack; they gathered every man according to his eating.
19And Moses said, Let no man leave of it till the morning.
20Notwithstanding they hearkened not unto Moses; but some of them left of it until the morning, and it bred worms, and stank: and Moses was wroth with them.
21And they gathered it every morning, every man according to his eating: and when the sun waxed hot, it melted.
Two Principles to Apply
Gather your own bread each day
You need to gather your own bread each day. Most Christians today, rely on someone else to gather the bread for them, and to tell them what the word of God has to say. You need to gather the bread for yourself.
You need to put forth the energy and effort to collect the bread for yourself
The gathered bread was only good for that day
They had to gather the manna each day, they had to repeat the process each day.
Manna is connected with the word of God
Matthew 4:1–4 (AV)
1Then was Jesus led up of the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil.
2And when he had fasted forty days and forty nights, he was afterward an hungred.
3And when the tempter came to him, he said, If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread.
4But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.
Jesus was quoting Deuteronomy 8:3:
Deuteronomy 8:1–3 (AV)
1All the commandments which I command thee this day shall ye observe to do, that ye may live, and multiply, and go in and possess the land which the LORD sware unto your fathers.
2And thou shalt remember all the way which the LORD thy God led thee these forty years in the wilderness, to humble thee, and to prove thee, to know what was in thine heart, whether thou wouldest keep his commandments, or no.
3And he humbled thee, and suffered thee to hunger, and fed thee with manna, which thou knewest not, neither did thy fathers know; that he might make thee know that man doth not live by bread only, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of the LORD doth man live.
The point is that we need more than just physical nourishment, we need Spiritual nourshiment.
We need to set aside time to be spiritually nourished from the Bible each and every day. The Bible provides all of the Spiritual nourishment that we need. The word does the work in our lives.
- The word sustains us – Hebrews 1:3
- The word Discerns for us – Hebrews 4:12
- The word brings the new birth that we need – James 1:18
