What God Can Do
The Apostle Paul finishes the Third chapter of the book to the Ephesians with a seven-fold prayer. This prayer seems to be an exhaustive list of the things that anyone could hope to pray:
- Strength for the inner-man
- Christ to dwell in their hearts by faith
- That they would be rooted in love
- They would be grounded in love
- For comprehension
- To know the love of Christ
- To be filled with the fullness of God
This list is not however exhaustive, as you will notice by the next statement that Paul makes. Paul says that God is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we could ask or even think. The above list in and of itself would be a great study, but today I want to speak about the fact that God Is Able!!
For this cause I bow my knees unto the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,
Of whom the whole family in heaven and earth is named,
That he would grant you, according to the riches of his glory, to be strengthened with might by his Spirit in the inner man;
That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that ye, being rooted and grounded in love,
May be able to comprehend with all saints what is the breadth, and length, and depth, and height;
And to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fulness of God.
Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us,
Unto him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus throughout all ages, world without end. Amen. - Ephesians 3:14-21
God Is Able To Give You More
The first thing in our list today is that God is able to give you more. Paul said that God is able to give us exceedingly abundantly more. He doubled up on his description because there are no limits to what God can do.
Moreover Amaziah gathered Judah together, and made them captains over thousands, and captains over hundreds, according to the houses of their fathers, throughout all Judah and Benjamin: and he numbered them from twenty years old and above, and found them three hundred thousand choice men, able to go forth to war, that could handle spear and shield.
He hired also an hundred thousand mighty men of valour out of Israel for an hundred talents of silver.
But there came a man of God to him, saying, O king, let not the army of Israel go with thee; for the LORD is not with Israel, to wit, with all the children of Ephraim.
But if thou wilt go, do it, be strong for the battle: God shall make thee fall before the enemy: for God hath power to help, and to cast down.
And Amaziah said to the man of God, But what shall we do for the hundred talents which I have given to the army of Israel? And the man of God answered, The LORD is able to give thee much more than this. - 2 Chronicles 25:5-9
King Amaziah had already paid for soldiers to fight in a battle that the Man of God was now telling him that he should not fight. The King, like most of civilization, seemed to be more concerned about what it would cost him to follow the directions of the Lord. He felt like he was ‘invested’ in this battle and did not know how he would re-cooperate the loss of funds.
The Man of God simply told the King that God is able to give you much more than this. Stop worrying about your finances. The Lord is able to give you much more than you can think or ask. After all, riches belong to God:
And I will shake all nations, and the desire of all nations shall come: and I will fill this house with glory, saith the LORD of hosts.
The silver is mine, and the gold is mine, saith the LORD of hosts. - Haggai 2:7-8
The Lord wants to bless you with gifts, but he will not be able to do so if you continue to run against his will. Stop the insanity of thinking that you are to ‘invested’ in your goals and plans, to allow the Lord to bless you.
He has given you all of your skills and abilities in the first place, and you would not be able to do a thing to help your financial situation if it wasn’t for his help anyway:
And thou say in thine heart, My power and the might of mine hand hath gotten me this wealth.
But thou shalt remember the LORD thy God: for it is he that giveth thee power to get wealth, that he may establish his covenant which he sware unto thy fathers, as it is this day. - Deuteronomy 8:17-18
God Is Able To Deliver You
The next item on our list of things that God can do is that he is able to deliver you from your troubles:
If it be so, our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace, and he will deliver us out of thine hand, O king.
thou hast set up. - Daniel 3:17
You can not deliver yourself from anything; all deliverance comes from God. He is able to deliver you from the following list and more:
- Dangers (2 Corinthians 1:8-10)
- Troubles (Psalms 34:17)
- Fears (Psalms 34:4)
- Sin (Galatians 1:4)
God Is Able To Make You Stand
Who art thou that judgest another man's servant? to his own master he standeth or falleth. Yea, he shall be holden up: for God is able to make him stand. - Romans 14:4
God is able to make you stand for some things. By him, we can stand firm (Romans 5:1-2). Jesus is our Rock, and he gives us a firm foundation on which to stand. Without that firm foundation it would be easy for Satan to push us off our mark, but since we have a firm foundation in the Lord Jesus Christ, we can stand firm. We can stand firm against the enemies of the Gospel (Philippians 1:27), and we can stand in the gap for others as well (Exodus 22:30).
The Lord calls us to stand in the gap between him and sinners to compel them to come to him. We are ambassadors for Christ and have the ministry of reconciliation, which means it is our job to reconcile sinners to him. We do this by standing in the gap and proclaiming the message of the Gospel of Grace.
God Is Able To Keep What Is Committed To Him
For the which cause I also suffer these things: nevertheless I am not ashamed: for I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have committed unto him against that day. - 2 Timothy 1:12
The Lord is able to keep all of his promises, and he is able to keep anything that you have committed to him because he is trustworthy:
This is a faithful saying and worthy of all acceptation.
For therefore we both labour and suffer reproach, because we trust in the living God, who is the Saviour of all men, specially of those that believe. - 1 Timothy 4:9-10
Mankind is not trustworthy, try as we may, we do not fulfill all of our commitments. We may have good intentions, but at the end of the day, more times than we would care to admit, we fail to fulfill those commitments. That is not the case with the Lord. He has never failed to hit the mark when it comes to fulfilling his commitments.
God Is Able To Save To The Uttermost
Wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them. - Hebrews 7:25
The Lord is able to save us to the uttermost. He is currently sitting at the right hand of the Father making intercession for us. In First John chapter two we are told to sin not, but if we do sin, we have an advocate with the father, Jesus Christ the righteous (1 John 2:1). The Bible tells us that there is one mediator between God and men, the Man Christ Jesus (1 Timothy 2:5).
We are all sinners
We need a mediator because we are all sinners: God forbid: yea, let God be true, but every man a liar; as it is written, That thou mightest be justified in thy sayings, and mightest overcome when thou art judged. - Romans 3:4
For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; - Romans 3:23
A penalty for sin must be paid
Sin is defined merely as disobedience to God. Since we have all sinned, we have a debt that is payable to God. That penalty must be paid:
For the wages of sin is death; - Romans 6:23a
And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire. - Revelation 20:14-15
But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death. - Revelation 21:8
If you attempt to pay this debt yourself, the above passages of scripture will show you your outcome. You need to realize the fact that you cannot pay this debt yourself:
But after that the kindness and love of God our Saviour toward man appeared, Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost; Which he shed on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Saviour; That being justified by his grace, we should be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life. - Titus 3:4-7
But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us, Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;) And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus: That in the ages to come he might shew the exceeding riches of his grace in his kindness toward us through Christ Jesus. For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast. - Ephesians 2:4-9
The debt was paid for you
Your debt has been paid in full by the sacrifice of the Lord Jesus Christ at the cross of Calvary:
but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. - Romans 6:23b
But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. - Romans 5:8
The payment needs to be applied
You cannot pay the debt of your sins yourself. No amount of good works or anything else will satisfy the debt that you owe to God. The only payment that will be accepted is the payment that Jesus has already made. You need to apply that payment to your account:
Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me. - John 14:6
The book of Romans was written to let the world know, how it is that they can know for sure that they have had their debt paid so that they can go to Heaven. The Lord has already completed all of the necessary steps. You need to accept that payment by:
That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. - Romans 10:9-10
For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. - Romans 10:13
Whosoever means you. It does not matter who you are, what you have done, what church you do or do not attend. If you call upon the name of the Lord today, he will save you from your sins, and apply his payment to your account.
He is calling for you today.
He died and rose again for you.
His blood washes away all sin.
Come to him while you are still able:
Seek ye the LORD while he may be found, call ye upon him while he is near:
Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts: and let him return unto the LORD, and he will have mercy upon him; and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon. - Isaiah 55:6-7
God is able to pardon you from your debt, but you must accept that pardon for it to be applied to your account.
Have you accepted the pardon?
